Set against a suburban landscape of single houses, the project involved the adaptive reuse of an existinig timber and brick warehouse in Sydney's south west. At the fringe of a semi-industrial area and residential houses, the factory sat at the awkward intersection of historial suburban sprawl, rapid redevelopment int he form of mid- to high-rise apartment developments and residual industrial buildings.

The design aimed to maintain significant amounts of the existing built fabric, demolishing only internal lightweight walls and the central warehouse bay to produce an outdoor playground for the 100 children accommodated in the preschool. A series of pods, forming classrooms and amenities, were situated under the existing trusses leaving the industrial history of the site to be present wherever possible.

The central bay of original trusses were removed and the timber salvaged, and used in furniture construction (a table made of these salvaged timbers sits in our offices).
